The lake has large numbers of trout, mainly Rainbow and Brooke Trout ranching from 8-20 inches. The lake is also known for Large Lake Trout (15-40 lbs) in early spring, with Browns and occasional Kokanee Salmon making appearances.

I fish Trinidad Lake most days. I have been having great success with bright/florescent pink spinners morning, noon, and night. Pinks, Purples and Oranges are working well during the sunlight hours. Silver and copper spoons have also been working well, but more so in the shadowy hours of morning and evening. The lake is low and quite weedy right now especially on the south shore. The north shore has large mud flats and weeds, but the weeds only grow out about 50 feet from shore. The weeds on the north shore are loaded with bass, the occasional walleye, and trout. Trout are hitting most lures through mid-morning and later into the evening. Mid-morning is best for trout, I\'ve been hooking into still water rainbows between 12 and 20 inches that are patrolling the mud flats for fry and minnows. They hit hard, and put up a great fight. I fish 6lb test. The fish are slow and lethargic because of the high water temperatures, so light feeling makes a big difference right now. You need to be able to tell the difference between dragging the bottom, hitting weeds, and a light strike from a lazy fish. Also most of the bass I have cot recently have crawdad feelers hanging out of they\'re throats. Crawdads are very easy to find at the lake, but have been a poor bait choice for me. As far as catfish go, I have yet to catch one. I have tried all kinds of baits, and tactics but the crawdads always seem to eat up the bait before a cat can find it! Also the farther I get, and the farther I walk away from roads the better I do! I dont own a boat, do all my fishing from shore, and am not afraid of an easy hike for better fishing. By the way, I grew up a western slope, a cold water stream trout fisherman, and am just getting this warm water/lake fishing thing. Hope this helps some one out there catch some fish!
