Cave Run Lake supports good populations of muskie, largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie and catfish. The latest state record muskie was taken from Cave Run Lake. This and other near-record catches have established Cave Run Lake as one of the most productive muskie lakes in the Southeastern United States.

Special Cave Run Lake Fishing Regulation - Slot Limit: Cave Run Lake has a special slot limit on largemouth bass. Largemouth bass between 13 and 16 inches in length must be released immediately. Largemouth bass less than 13 inches in length or greater than 16 inches in length may be kept. Smallmouth bass measuring 16 inches or less must be released immediately. Slot limit requirements and minimum size limits do not apply to the Kentucky (spotted) bass. The daily catch limit (six) and possession limit (12) apply to any combination of the black bass species. 77 degrees in in the largemouth bass prime water temperature range and fishing should be good right now. Baitfish are much more active in this water temperature and the largemouth bass will be feeding aggressively throughout the day. This is a great time of year to be on the water.

Smallmouth bass fishing is going to be pretty slow at this water temperature. Bass will typically start moving much slower and feeding less aggressive until the water temperature starts to get back down to comfortable levels. When the water temperature is up this high, get out fishing early and late and cast in the shallows. When the sun is up it will be time to get out into deeper water, try fishing some drop offs and deep channel bends.

Crappie prefer this water temperature and will be actively feeding and staying in solid patterns. Baitfish are more active and schooling in all parts of the lake in this water temperature.

Walleye will be starting to get a little slower in this water temperature. With walleye being a cold water fish, they will start becoming fairly lethargic in this water. With the fish slowing down the fishing will be more difficult to find and coax into biting. However they will be feeding and the walleye bite should still be good. This time of year is a good time to fall back to live bait as standard practice for the best bet at numbers and size of fish.

The entire catfish family is very active and actively feeding in this water temperature. All catfish including blue catfish, flathead and channel catfish will be looking for their next meal. It’s perfect time to get on the water and fill the freezer. Good luck out there.
