Hillsdale Lake is one of Kansas' premier fishing lakes. With over 75% of the standing timber left in the lake, fish populations have ideal habitat to grow and reproduce. Crappie are the species of choice for most fishermen at Hillsdale Lake. The lake reached conservation pool in 1985, since that time, crappie numbers have stayed at excellent levels to provide fishermen with plenty of action. A 10" length limit has been implemented for Crappie and a 20 fish limit has been implemented for Creel. Hillsdale is known as one of the top Largemouth Bass lakes in the state, with an 18" length limit on bass, bass numbers remain at high levels with many quality to trophy size bass. Another species of fish that is getting recognition in Hillsdale Lake is the Walleye, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks fisheries biologist have stocked millions of Walleye into Hillsdale. Netting samples show that the lake contains many quality to trophy size walleye. An 18" length limit applies to Hillsdale Lake Walleye. Hillsdale Lake also maintains a large population of catfish. Channel, and Flathead catfish prowl the lake always looking for a meal. Fishermen will need a state fishing license and a State Park Permit to fish from State Park areas. - Rock pile is hit and miss for largemouth bass, but a great spot to try.

Largemouth bass fishing is going to be pretty slow at 82 degree water temperature. Bass will start moving much slower and feeding less aggressively until the water temperature starts to get back down to comfortable levels. When the water temperature is up this high, it's time to get out fishing early and late in the day when the sun is not on the water. When you can get out for the entire day, it's a great time to fish some deeper water. Many large bass are taken this time of year since bass fishermen typically gets out deeper and fish slower with larger baits. Like any other time of year, the slower you fish with bigger baits on the deep drops and river channels, the better chance you have at a lunker. This is a great time to catch a trophy. - If you are looking for Smallmouth Bass at hillsdale, you have your work cut out for you. There are no Smallmouth in Hillsdale

Smallmouth bass fishing is going to be pretty slow at this water temperature. Bass will typically start moving much slower and feeding less aggressive until the water temperature starts to get back down to comfortable levels. When the water temperature is up this high, get out fishing early and late and cast in the shallows. When the sun is up it will be time to get out into deeper water, try fishing some drop offs and deep channel bends.

Your lake crappie will be much more lethargic in the water temperature. They will be in deeper and cooler water. Crappie will be feeding; however they will not be feeding aggressively unless the other fishing factors are at prime levels. Find some moving water that is clear and you should find some more aggressive fishing.

- Walleye fishing is getting better on Hillsdale. I have caught several decent walleye's while bass fishing here. Jerk baits mostly.

With the water temperatures up this high, the walleye will really be moving slow and feeding even slower. It will be extremely difficult to stay on fish and catch good numbers. There will be good days that you can find a good pattern and fill the live well up. The good days of walleye fishing will be fewer and farther between until the water temperature gets back down. Unlike most North American fish species, blue catfish, flathead and channel catfish are comfortable when the water temperature is this high. They will be feeding and moving in typical patterns. You will start having a little better luck if you can get to some moving water that is adding a little more oxygen for the baitfish and the catfish will be there also.
