Hillsdale Lake is one of Kansas' premier fishing lakes. With over 75% of the standing timber left in the lake, fish populations have ideal habitat to grow and reproduce. Crappie are the species of choice for most fishermen at Hillsdale Lake. The lake reached conservation pool in 1985, since that time, crappie numbers have stayed at excellent levels to provide fishermen with plenty of action. A 10" length limit has been implemented for Crappie and a 20 fish limit has been implemented for Creel. Hillsdale is known as one of the top Largemouth Bass lakes in the state, with an 18" length limit on bass, bass numbers remain at high levels with many quality to trophy size bass. Another species of fish that is getting recognition in Hillsdale Lake is the Walleye, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks fisheries biologist have stocked millions of Walleye into Hillsdale. Netting samples show that the lake contains many quality to trophy size walleye. An 18" length limit applies to Hillsdale Lake Walleye. Hillsdale Lake also maintains a large population of catfish. Channel, and Flathead catfish prowl the lake always looking for a meal. Fishermen will need a state fishing license and a State Park Permit to fish from State Park areas. Largemouth bass fishing is going to be slow with the water temperature at 43 degrees. If you have a chance to get out on the water, you are going to have to fish deep and slow. Jig fishing and Plastic baits may be your best bet this time of year for largemouth bass. You may also try fishing some sinking jerk baits.

Crappie Tips for Current Conditions:
Crappie fishing is sometimes at its best with the water temperature down this low. Crappie will be in large schools and follow the large shad schools around in extremely deep water. Find the deepest parts of your lake in old river channels and scan your graph for schooling shad. When you find the school, drop your plastics or live bait down to the bottom of the shad and get ready. Many crappie fishermen will be catching awesome numbers and size of fish this time of year. If you are brave enough to get out on the water this time when the water temperature is this cold, it can really pay off. Be careful out there, remember to boat safely. Never take any chances at these temperatures.

We fished on Saturday and if you can find less stained water, it was good.
Caught several 11+ and one 13". They were suspended over the creek channels
prior to moving in. Good luck

Water temps are all over the place. The warm up has been lost with this cold snap we've had. The crappie are still biting if you can find them. 15-20' depths still.

Walleye Tips for Current Conditions:
Walleye will be staging and getting ready to spawn now. With Walleye spawning grounds generally on gravel and rocky bottoms and preferring clean water. Start looking for pre-spawn fish in deeper waters with easy access to shallow clean water rocky bottoms. Walleye should be feeding aggressively right up until they start laying eggs. This is a perfect time to be fishing for Walleye.

I have caught many walleye below the dam in the spillway up to eight lbs. I always catch green perch and/or bluegill and use them live both under a bobber and n a bottom weight dropper rig. I stumbled across this method of catching walleye while fishing for catfish. It works best in the spillways at Clinton, Hillsdale and Pomona. The best bite starts in early June but fall is also a hot catch.

Catfish Tips for Current Conditions:
The catfish family comprises of blue catfish, flathead catfish and channel catfish. Since catfish are warm water fish, they aren’t going to be very active in this water temperature. They will still be feeding, but catfish will only be found very deep and feeding very slowly. Your best bet is give some of the more active fish species in your lake a shot until the cats are active again.

The fisherman should never use this as an excuse to not get on the water. The affects of the moon can only enhance the outcome of a day's fishing not decrease potential catch for today. On days without the new or full moon, all other factors including weather, barometric pressure, wind and cloud cover will make up today's equation for success.
