Elk City Lake is located about 5 miles northwest of Independence, Kansas, and is well known among the fisherman and hunters. Elk City Lake is also a great place for boaters, swimmers, skiers, and sightseers to come and enjoy nature. Elk City Lake offers excellent opportunities for fishing. Principal species of sport fish found in the lake include white crappie, wipers, white bass, largemouth bass, saugeye, channel catfish, flathead and various sunfish. Fishing tournaments are welcome on the lake, for more information or to schedule a fishing tournament call the Project Office at (620)336-2741. An application should be filled out for each tournament. State regulations also apply at the lake, a complete list of regulations is available at the project office. A high barometric pressure system is sitting over the lake. Fish will be heading to deeper water, or they will tuck away in cover. With the pressure high, it will be little more challenging to coax them to bite. Your best bet is to take the opportunity to go for a little larger fish. Don’t fish for quantity; it’s time to go for the trophy. Slow down your lures and presentation and get out in deeper water using your favorite plastics, worms, jigs, and finesse baits. With high barometric pressure on your lake, slow down that deep diving crank bait or grab your jerk bait and pause it a little longer.
