General: The lake of the Ozarks was created with the construction of Bagnell Damn at the Osage River in central Missouri in 1931. The reservoir impoundment includes three smaller tributaries to the Osage, the Niangua River, Grandglaize creek and Gravois Creek. The lake area is an astounding 55,000 acres and stretches over 1150 miles of shoreline. Since the lake was built it has become a top vacation spot in the midwest for both boating enthusiast and fisherman. Lake of the Ozarks is a stop for BASS tournaments and FLW fishing tournaments, not to mention the dozens and dozens of smaller local fishing competitions. Lake of the Ozarks at the time of construction was the largest man made lake in the united states.
Fishing: Many freshwater sport fishing species are actively pursued in Lake of the Ozarks. With over 70,000 lake homes along the 1150 miles of shoreline, many of which have a boat dock and man, it's an excellent lake for bass fishing

Largemouth Bass Tips for Current Conditions:
Largemouth bass fishing is going to be slow with the water temperature at 46 degrees. If you have a chance to get out on the water, you are going to have to fish deep and slow. Jig fishing and Plastic baits may be your best bet this time of year for largemouth bass. You may also try fishing some sinking jerk baits.

Crappie Tips for Current Conditions:
Crappie fishing is sometimes at its best with the water temperature down this low. Crappie will be in large schools and follow the large shad schools around in extremely deep water. Find the deepest parts of your lake in old river channels and scan your graph for schooling shad. When you find the school, drop your plastics or live bait down to the bottom of the shad and get ready. Many crappie fishermen will be catching awesome numbers and size of fish this time of year. If you are brave enough to get out on the water this time when the water temperature is this cold, it can really pay off. Be careful out there, remember to boat safely. Never take any chances at these temperatures.

The males with females close are up on the banks fishing is good use crappie jigs and fish cover or around docks in 8ft of water or less near deep water.

Crappie fishing has really picked up in the back cove areas near to or ajacent to channel cuts and deeper shaded docks due to the cooler water temps and the shortening of the daylight hours. Watch the surface for baitfish sckools surfacing and the crappie should be nearby or directly underneath foraging to increace thier body fat for the perhaps long cold winter. Minnows and 1-1/2 inch shad immitation jigs work great for me.

Walleye Tips for Current Conditions:
Walleye will be staging and getting ready to spawn now. With Walleye spawning grounds generally on gravel and rocky bottoms and preferring clean water. Start looking for pre-spawn fish in deeper waters with easy access to shallow clean water rocky bottoms. Walleye should be feeding aggressively right up until they start laying eggs. This is a perfect time to be fishing for Walleye.

- Well we wanted to go catfishing there and didn't know where to go we asked around town and then went to this johnny g's got his stink bait and he showed us what to do.We caught so many fish and we all had a blast fishing,it was really nice.
Catfish Tips for Current Conditions:
The catfish family comprises of blue catfish, flathead catfish and channel catfish. Since catfish are warm water fish, they aren’t going to be very active in this water temperature. They will still be feeding, but catfish will only be found very deep and feeding very slowly. Your best bet is give some of the more active fish species in your lake a shot until the cats are active again.

MDC is considering protective regulations for blue catfish on Truman Reservoir and Lake of the Ozarks and their tributaries, including the no-boating zone below Truman Dam. This is an effort to improve the quality and reverse the decline of larger blue catfish in these waters. Both reservoirs contain large numbers of smaller blue catfish, but numbers of medium and large blues have declined. Learn more and share your comments at:

- We had great luck last weekend trolling with white rooster tails with silver spoons. They were 20-25 feet deep off of rocky points. The mouth of the gravois arm is where we were fishing.

The fisherman should never use this as an excuse to not get on the water. The affects of the moon can only enhance the outcome of a day's fishing not decrease potential catch for today. On days without the new or full moon, all other factors including weather, barometric pressure, wind and cloud cover will make up today's equation for success.
