On 4/24/12 My father and I caught caught and released 11 large mouths. One at just over 4 lbs, one about 2 1/2 lbs, and the rest around 1-1 1/2 lbs. Caught the first 2 in the early morning on a white and silver top water popper. Then the rest during a 2 hour span around lunch time, 11-1 o\'clock, on dark plastic worms and lizards with tails dipped in garlic. Was a great day on Old Hickory!

- Can't believe OH is rated two and a half for smallmouth... I live on this lake and fish it three to four time a week... I started targeting smallmouth several years ago... I go to Dale Hollow often and catch lots of smallmouth. Very few Smallmouth on OH and they are very small... not the right habitat...
Smallmouth Bass Tips for Current Conditions:
Smallmouth bass fishing is going to be slow with the water temperature at 47 degrees. It's time to fish deep and slow. Try some deep primary points, drop offs, and old river channels with rocks. Jigs, plastics and deep jerk baits will be your best bet to boat a smallmouth.

- We were catching striped bass on ratlers real steady for about an hour, regretfully none were large enough to keep but we had fun. My son caught a 16 large mouth bass using a crawdad rig. With the warmer weather the water tempature averaged 59 to 61 degrees. Water clarity was good (you could see your lures 2 to 3 feet down.

Crappie Tips for Current Conditions:
Crappie fishing is sometimes at its best with the water temperature down this low. Crappie will be in large schools and follow the large shad schools around in extremely deep water. Find the deepest parts of your lake in old river channels and scan your graph for schooling shad. When you find the school, drop your plastics or live bait down to the bottom of the shad and get ready. Many crappie fishermen will be catching awesome numbers and size of fish this time of year. If you are brave enough to get out on the water this time when the water temperature is this cold, it can really pay off. Be careful out there, remember to boat safely. Never take any chances at these temperatures.

Walleye Tips for Current Conditions:
Walleye will be staging and getting ready to spawn now. With Walleye spawning grounds generally on gravel and rocky bottoms and preferring clean water. Start looking for pre-spawn fish in deeper waters with easy access to shallow clean water rocky bottoms. Walleye should be feeding aggressively right up until they start laying eggs. This is a perfect time to be fishing for Walleye.

Saturday April 7 I was on Old Hickory today with John and his son John who were the winners of a free trip from Doug Markham's Outdoor show. John had called and setup a walleye trip and then we had to move it to today. I was a little concerned with all the warm weather but pretty sure we would figure it out quickly, which we did. We checked 2 areas and the 1st had nothing happening and then the 2nd had fish but the current was too swift. We then moved to our final location and had a blast. We caught over 30 walleye and sauger and a myriad of other fish. I had an absolute blast and look forward to going out with John and his son again, we discussed a trip while we were out there. We caught our fish on 8lb test Suffix Pro-Mix, 5/8th oz jigs tipped with minnows bouncing the bottom. If you are interested in taking a trip contact Mark and have your day setup for you. - I think the rating should be closer to 5 out of 5. I hear they are on fire, expecially below the dam. (today is 6/16/10)
Catfish Tips for Current Conditions:
The catfish family comprises of blue catfish, flathead catfish and channel catfish. Since catfish are warm water fish, they aren’t going to be very active in this water temperature. They will still be feeding, but catfish will only be found very deep and feeding very slowly. Your best bet is give some of the more active fish species in your lake a shot until the cats are active again.

Old Hickory Lake Solar and Lunar Conditions
Current Lunar Fishing Tip:
The affects of the moon on freshwater fish and game are at a minimum right now. There will be another full moon coming up here in a few days. The fisherman should never use this as an excuse to not get on the water. The affects of the moon can only enhance the outcome of a day's fishing not decrease potential catch for today. On days without the new or full moon, all other factors including weather, barometric pressure, wind and cloud cover will make up today's equation for success.
