2015-01-29 Fishing has, for the most part, remained good over the last week on Old Hickory. It still remains hit or miss but when you hit them you can catch quality fish as well as good numbers. The fish have remained in a lot of the same patterns they have been in and some days for the most part have been pretty predictable. Weather has remained consistent over the last week with several days being beautiful. Water temps have remained pretty steady in the mid 40's on the river with the pockets being slightly cooler.

Our patterns and techniques have remained the same over the last week ... [more]

2015-01-19 After a couple weeks of extremely cold winter weather Old Hickory has rebounded well in the last week. 2 weeks ago the temperatures were down right frigid and we were breaking ice leaving the boat ramp as we were headed deer and duck hunting. As typical Tennessee weather would have it a week later we are in for almost short sleeve weather!!! The weather has turned beautiful and the fishing has been pretty good with some days better than others.

We have been fishing from mid lake down towards the dam and water temperatures are pretty varied. The main river is consistently in the mid... [more]

- Can't believe OH is rated two and a half for smallmouth... I live on this lake and fish it three to four time a week... I started targeting smallmouth several years ago... I go to Dale Hollow often and catch lots of smallmouth. Very few Smallmouth on OH and they are very small... not the right habitat...

- We were catching striped bass on ratlers real steady for about an hour, regretfully none were large enough to keep but we had fun. My son caught a 16 large mouth bass using a crawdad rig. With the warmer weather the water tempature averaged 59 to 61 degrees. Water clarity was good (you could see your lures 2 to 3 feet down.

Crappie Tips for Current Conditions (automated):
Crappie fishing is sometimes at its best with the water temperature down this low. Crappie will be in large schools and follow the large shad schools around in extremely deep water. Find the deepest parts of your lake in old river channels and scan your graph for schooling shad. When you find the school, drop your plastics or live bait down to the bottom of the shad and get ready. Many crappie fishermen will be catching awesome numbers and size of fish this time of year. If you are brave enough to get out on the water this time when the water temperature is this cold, it can really pay off. Be careful out there, remember to boat safely. Never take any chances at these temperatures.

Walleye Tips for Current Conditions (automated):
Walleye will be staging and getting ready to spawn now. With Walleye spawning grounds generally on gravel and rocky bottoms and preferring clean water. Start looking for pre-spawn fish in deeper waters with easy access to shallow clean water rocky bottoms. Walleye should be feeding aggressively right up until they start laying eggs. This is a perfect time to be fishing for Walleye.

- I think the rating should be closer to 5 out of 5. I hear they are on fire, expecially below the dam. (today is 6/16/10)
Catfish Tips for Current Conditions (automated):
The catfish family comprises of blue catfish, flathead catfish and channel catfish. Since catfish are warm water fish, they arenít going to be very active in this water temperature. They will still be feeding, but catfish will only be found very deep and feeding very slowly. Your best bet is give some of the more active fish species in your lake a shot until the cats are active again.

Old Hickory Lake Solar and Lunar Conditions
Current Lunar Fishing Tip:
The full moon is right around the corner. The gravitational pull is starting to increase with the moon and sun being on opposite sides of the planet. Watch the peak fishing times and make sure you are on the water during that part of the day to take full advantage of today's solar/lunar peaks. It's always fun trying something new at the peak times to change things up a bit and test out the Lunar Theory each time you hit the water in close to full and full moon situations. Good luck you there.
