Wife and I made our first journey to beautiful Buckhorn State Park in S.E. KY on 4/18 and 19th to hike, fish, and enjoy spring with friends in the foothills. The sites of blooming plants and wildlife lookin for love were wonderful, Lodge food and employees were fantastic, but the fishing was rough. The lake is very high and being drained. No chance to fish the spillway unless you get one of the two spots against the wall. Trout will hit on worm just a few few from shore there but hard to catch do to constant water movement. Of course just a few days ago they were slainin the recently stocked spillway. Use 2 small sinkers, tiny hook, and red worms. Cast 15\' out and hold your pole wait till it twitches! If catching fish is not a goal fishing the calm water in a little creek from a camp ground spot is very relaxing just down from the spillway. We fished flooded waters of the dam boat ramp amongst the moving trash where lots of gar patrol the debris and could be had from you fish bow folks but no real fish wanna be where gar are. We bank fished the flooded Eagle county camp ground with a few nibbles in the ditch along the road. If ya cast far enough ya git 3 points for making into the basketball hoop that is 4\' above the water. As a bonus we saw a feller warsh his truck by driving into the flooded parking lot, npo wax just warshed the bottom third. We fished the state lodge area with a few bites and one lost fish, catfish I presume, deadline using a floating gig and sinker with night crawlers. Apologies to any Canadians who read this, they don\'t like the word night with their crawlers. A few bites on Red or meal worms and bobbers as well. Don\'t be skeered to fish structure such as park benches, electical podiums, bath houses, concrete forms or swing sets. Sometimes ya have to adapt in life. The carp seem to be in heaven with new grassy feeding grounds, I threw a repala, jitterbug, rooster tails, jig heads, and spinners to narry a single hit so you try artificial worm and salty crawls and let me know how it goes. I suspect you will have a better chance. We only saw 6 other folks fishing from shore and a couple in a boat on a good weekend so maybe the locals know something we don\'t or maybe the youngins can\'t git their nose outta the smarty paints phones and computers long enough to see God\'s creations. We enjoyed our weekend there and left our friends for the week if ya wanna go say hey to em.

Buckhorn Lake Crappie Tips: [ Add Tip ]
- I\'ve been catching crappie 10 to 11 inches in size using minnows. If you can find a bait store that\'s still open get live bait it\'s working best right now for crappie fishing. I\'ve found that the river channel of Buckhorn Lake down near the damn is the best place to catch them.
Crappie Tips for Current Conditions (automated):
Crappie prefer this water temperature and will be actively feeding and staying in solid patterns. Baitfish are more active and schooling in all parts of the lake in this water temperature.

Buckhorn Lake Walleye Tips: [ Add Tip ]
Walleye Tips for Current Conditions (automated):
This is the water temperature of choice for walleye. They are feeding well and moving in patterns that should be fairly easy to pick up and capitalize on today. Baitfish are not at the peak of activity but they will be in good supply in the deeper water. The lake is really turning on this time of year and the fish should be biting well.

Buckhorn Lake White Bass Tips: [ Add Tip ]
- I find it hard to believe the rating is so low for white bass. The white bass are coming off the nest right now and are extremely active anywhere from the opossum bend portion to the low water bridge in the confluence section. Night-crawlers are pretty good, red-worms are better, green stink worms is the best live worm. I find with artificial that I have the best luck with white rooster tail & gold tone medium spinners.

Current Lunar Fishing Tip:

The crescent moon will have better gravitational pull than a gibbous or half moon. However the affects of the moons gravitational will be decreased since the sun and moon aren't pulling in conjunction with one another. It's time to pay close attention to the other fishing factors in the weather to make the best decision for hitting the water.
