Last trip to the lake was Martin Luther King Day. Water temp 38 - 40 in the river channel into the mouth of Peters Creek. Several Fisherman were running spider rigs in the main channel with little to no luck. I noticed most of them did not use fish finders at all just continued to troll. My wife and I trolled the channel for a few hours with no luck then moved into the creek channel where I began to notice bait fish on my finders holding at 12 feet. We caught 30 crappie ranging from 9 to 12 inches in 2 hours all on jigs.

Barren River Lake Largemouth Bass Tips: [ Add Tip ]
Largemouth Bass Tips for Current Conditions (automated):
With Barren River Lake at 50 degree water temperature this is a great time to get out on the water and try hitting some deeper primary and secondary points. Largemouth bass will be feeding at this water temperature but will be much harder to catch. On Sunny warm afternoons its a great time to throw a crank bait, jigs or slow roll a spinnerbait at 5-10 foot on sunny points and drops off of sunny flats. Largemouth Bass will move into warm water on warm sunny days.

Barren River Lake Smallmouth Bass Tips: [ Add Tip ]
Smallmouth Bass Tips for Current Conditions (automated):
Smallmouth bass fishing is going to be slow with the water temperature at 50 degrees. It's time to fish deep and slow. Try some deep primary points, drop offs, and old river channels with rocks. Jigs, plastics and deep jerk baits will be your best bet to boat a smallmouth.

- water tower in front state beach off minnow and pink jigs
Crappie Tips for Current Conditions (automated):
With the Water Temperature at 50 all crappie should be up in their spawning areas now and spawn should be getting started. There will be a few few still in the deeps and prespawn areas, but a majority should be up getting ready or already spawning. Continue to hit the creek channels on the migration routes. Focus on isolated cover in a little shallower water. No need to get crazy shallow but start focusing on 15 feet or less of water. On warmer sunny days if the water is still at 50 you should attempt to bounce back and forth from 5-15 feet of water to attempt nailing a solid pattern fo r the day. Try a Kentucky rig baited with minnow, tube bait and small jigs.
Barren River Lake Walleye Rating:
2.5
Barren River Lake Walleye Tips: [ Add Tip ]
Walleye Tips for Current Conditions (automated):
The walleye spawn is in full swing now. With Walleye spawning grounds generally on gravel and rocky bottoms and preferring clean water. Try throwing reaction type baits up in the shallows. Rip-Rap, damns, rocky bottom points are perfect to hit. Try fishing some faster crank baits and spinners this time of year. As always fall back to the standard walleye fishing tactics, but it won?t hurt bringing out the bass gear in search for spawning walleyes. In this water temperature, always be safe on the water.
Barren River Lake Catfish Rating:
3.5
Barren River Lake Catfish Tips: [ Add Tip ]
Catfish Tips for Current Conditions (automated):
The catfish family comprises of blue catfish, flathead catfish and channel catfish. Since catfish are warm water fish, they arenít going to be very active in this water temperature. They will still be feeding, but catfish will only be found very deep and feeding very slowly. Your best bet is give some of the more active fish species in your lake a shot until the cats are active again.

Current Lunar Fishing Tip:

New Moon fishing can be at its best. The gravitational pull on the earth is at its peak when the moon and sun are rising and setting at the same time of day. This combination can generate extraordinary fishing opportunities especially if combined with perfect weather variances. The new moon may have the fish extremely aggressive and actively hunting for food. Try fishing a little faster today and with several different baits and techniques. When fish are more aggressive, its always fun to fish a little more aggressive. Watch the peak fishing times and make sure you are on the water during that part of the day to take full advantage of today?s solar/lunar peaks. Have a great day!
